“The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.”
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
This excerpt from “The Ladder of St. Augustine” has had a profound impact on my life. As a child, my mother would recite it to me frequently. It was instilled into the depths of my subconscious and over time, has become etched into the fabric of my soul. Hard work is not something that I shrink away from, rather, it is an opportunity to further my own goals and aspirations, so I embrace it. One of the things that Dr. Randy Pausch notes in his “Last Lecture” is the importance of not complaining, but instead one should “just work harder.” This is a sentiment with which I agree, in part, because it is often the case that through diligence and hard work, time and energy saving solutions will appear.
